China’s RMB Clearing Bank Launch Marks New Milestone in Financial Cooperation with Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, October 15, 2026: Sri Lanka marked a significant milestone in its financial cooperation with China with the unveiling ceremony of the Renminbi (RMB) Clearing Bank in Sri Lanka, held at Shangri-La Colombo on Thursday.

The event was attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the President of the Bank of China, and representatives from the banking community and business sector.

The establishment of the RMB Clearing Bank is expected to facilitate cross-border transactions in Chinese currency, support bilateral trade and investment, and strengthen financial cooperation between the two countries.

The clearing facility is intended to provide Sri Lankan businesses and financial institutions with improved access to RMB settlement services, potentially reducing transaction costs and simplifying payments related to trade and investment between Sri Lanka and China.

The initiative comes amid efforts by both countries to deepen economic and commercial relations and expand opportunities for businesses operating across their markets. Greater access to RMB settlement services could also help diversify payment options for importers, exporters and financial institutions.

Addressing the gathering, representatives highlighted the importance of strengthening financial links and creating more efficient channels for cross-border transactions. The initiative also reflects the growing role of financial infrastructure in supporting international trade and investment.

The launch is expected to open further opportunities for cooperation between the banking sectors of Sri Lanka and China, while supporting businesses seeking to expand bilateral commercial activities.

The ceremony brought together key representatives from government, central banking, commercial banking and the private sector, underscoring the importance of collaboration in advancing financial connectivity between the two countries.

The establishment of the RMB Clearing Bank represents a new step in China–Sri Lanka financial cooperation, with the potential to facilitate trade, investment and closer economic engagement in the years ahead.
