EngineAI Launches World’s First Commercial Humanoid Robot Combat League in Shenzhen
China’s robotics company EngineAI has launched URKL, the world’s first commercially operated full-size humanoid robot combat league in Shenzhen, featuring AI-powered T800 robots competing in a historic tournament.
Shenzhen: A new era in humanoid robotics has begun as China’s Shenzhen hosted the world’s first commercially operated full-size humanoid robot fighting league.
The inaugural event of URKL (Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend) was held at the Nanshan Culture and Sports Center, where two humanoid robots — “White Eagle” and “Bullfighter” — competed in front of a packed audience. After five rounds of intense close-range combat, Bullfighter secured victory with a 3–2 decision.
The tournament was organized by Shenzhen-based robotics company EngineAI, featuring its T800 humanoid robot as the official competition platform.
All participating teams competed using the same T800 model, with performance differences determined by artificial intelligence algorithms, software development, motion control and system optimization.
EngineAI founder and CEO Zhao Tongyang described the tournament as a major milestone in bringing humanoid robotics from research laboratories into commercial entertainment.
“This is our takeoff point. The first airplane flew only 30 meters, and today we cross oceans. URKL starts here, and we aim to fly farther,” Zhao said.
More than 200 teams from China, the United States, Poland and Singapore registered for the competition, with 32 teams advancing to the main tournament after qualification rounds.
The event also attracted international attention with a surprise appearance by Hong Kong action star and martial arts icon Donnie Yen, who presented awards to EngineAI’s engineering team.
The T800 humanoid robot stands 1.73 meters tall and produces up to 450 newton-metres of joint torque. It is capable of advanced movements including spinning kicks, powerful punches and rapid recovery after falls.
According to EngineAI, the robot uses real-time visual sensing and AI-based decision-making systems to identify opponents, predict movements and execute counterattacks.
“The real challenge is not throwing a punch. It is sensing, deciding and recovering in a dynamic environment within fractions of a second,” Zhao said.
EngineAI announced that it will open-source the tournament’s core algorithms and optimization technologies, allowing the global robotics community to study and improve the systems.
The company said URKL will serve as both a competitive platform and a testing ground for embodied artificial intelligence, supporting future applications in manufacturing, logistics and daily life.
“We are building a stage to demonstrate strength, a ring for competition, and a platform for collaboration. The ultimate goal is to advance the entire robotics industry,” said Yao Qiyuan, EngineAI co-founder.
The company plans to expand the tournament internationally, combining technology, entertainment, sponsorships and robotics innovation to accelerate the development of humanoid AI.
