The Alumni Association was established as a special initiative of the Education Wing of the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, which oversees India's educational and scholarship programmes for Sri Lankans, including the ITEC programme.

The initiative was carried out under the leadership of Sandeep Chaudhary, First Secretary (Education) at the High Commission of India. His vision and support played a significant role in bringing Sri Lankan ITEC alumni together on a common platform for the first time.

Launched by the Government of India in 1964, the ITEC programme has become a key pillar of India's development cooperation with countries of the Global South. Fully funded by the Government of India, the programme provides training in a wide range of fields, including public administration, finance, information technology, engineering, agriculture and healthcare.

The training courses are delivered through leading institutions in India. Over more than six decades, the programme has provided training opportunities to government officials and professionals from more than 160 partner countries.

Sri Lanka is an active participant in the ITEC programme, through which thousands of Sri Lankan officials and professionals from both the public and private sectors have benefited.

The election of the new Executive Committee marks an important step towards strengthening the network of ITEC alumni in Sri Lanka, promoting professional cooperation and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and experience among former participants of the programme.
