‘New Village Campaign’ Holds Post-Perahera Community Clean-Up in Kandy, Sri Lanka : Community Cleanup Following Sri Lanka’s Largest Buddhist Festival

In an era marked by conflict and division, Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) has been advancing reconciliation and recovery for humanity since its founding in 2013. Operating in over 170 countries, HWPL promotes the enactment of international law, interfaith dialogue, peace education, and neutral peace-oriented media activities that foster healthy public opinion based on truth and facts.

On August 10, 2025, HWPL hosted the Post-Perahera Community Clean-up in Kandy as part of its New Village Campaign. The event took place immediately after the Kandy Esala Perahera, Sri Lanka’s largest and most renowned Buddhist procession, and was held at the same festival site.

The cleanup was jointly organized by the Environmental Development and Welfare Foundation (EDWF), the Municipal Council of Kandy, and the Kandy Youth Association, bringing together a total of 41 participants, including 4 distinguished guests, 15 citizens, 7 HWPL staff members, and 15 religious leaders.

Participants carried out large-scale cleaning activities across the festival grounds, collecting waste and recyclable materials, which were officially handed over to the Municipal Council. Through this initiative, HWPL established close ties with Mr. Thusan, founder of EDWF, while several volunteers expressed their interest in joining future HWPL peace projects.

A representative from HWPL Sri Lanka stated, “This post-festival cleanup was more than restoring the beauty of the city. It served as an opportunity to inspire a culture of peace and civic responsibility within the local community. We look forward to signing an MOU with EDWF and the Kandy Municipal Council in September to establish a long-term partnership.”

Mr. Thusan, founder of EDWF, added, “Our collaboration with HWPL will bring new awareness to local youth and citizens, acting as a stepping stone toward a more united and better society.”

HWPL plans to continue expanding the New Village Campaign across Sri Lanka, integrating legislative initiatives, education, and civic engagement into sustainable peace projects.
