Kings Hospital Colombo Commissions Rs. 200 Million Cardiac Theatre Complex to Strengthen Advanced Heart Care

Kings Hospital Colombo commissioned its New Cardiac Theatre Complex on 8 th October 2026, following an investment of over Rs. 200 million, marking a significant step in strengthening its specialized cardiac care services. The development reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to enhancing its medical infrastructure, expanding treatment capabilities and improving access to advanced cardiac care in Sri Lanka.

The upgraded theatre is equipped with modern surgical technology designed to support complex cardiac procedures. The investment is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to deliver specialized cardiac surgical services, with a continued focus on precision, patient safety and effective treatment outcomes.

A key feature of the enhanced facilities is the provision of a separate new Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (ICU), dedicated to the specialized monitoring and management of patients undergoing heart surgery. The integration of the dedicated surgical theatres and Cardiothoracic ICU enables a more coordinated approach to patient care, ensuring specialized medical attention throughout surgery and the critical post-operative recovery period. Beyond the newly commissioned theatre complex, Kings Hospital Colombo offers a comprehensive range of cardiac care facilities, including a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), Coronary Care Unit and a separate Cardiac Ward.

Together, these facilities support an integrated approach to cardiac treatment, enabling patients to receive specialized care from diagnosis and intervention through to intensive care and recovery.

The hospital also places significant emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration in delivering comprehensive cardiac treatment. Cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac anesthesiologists, critical care specialists and nursing professionals work together to provide coordinated care at every stage of the patient journey, from initial assessment and surgical intervention to intensive care and recovery.

The availability of advanced surgical equipment, complemented by dedicated critical care facilities, further strengthens the hospital’s ability to manage patients requiring complex cardiac interventions. These improvements support a more integrated treatment pathway, allowing medical teams to maintain continuity of care while addressing the specialized needs of cardiac patients.

The commissioning of the new complex also underscores the importance of sustained investment in healthcare infrastructure and medical technology as demand for specialized treatment services continues. By strengthening its cardiac care facilities, Kings Hospital Colombo aims to contribute towards improving the availability and quality of advanced heart care within the country's private healthcare sector.

The commissioning of the New Cardiac Theatre Complex represents another milestone in Kings Hospital Colombo’s ongoing efforts to enhance clinical excellence and patient-centered healthcare. Through continued investment in specialized facilities, advanced medical technology and multidisciplinary expertise, the hospital remains focused on delivering comprehensive cardiac treatment and supporting better health outcomes for patients across Sri Lanka.

Further strengthening its cardiac surgical capabilities, Kings Hospital Colombo has recently introduced a robotic surgical system, enabling surgeons to perform cardiac procedures with greater precision through minimally invasive techniques. The hospital has also achieved a significant milestone in Sri Lanka's healthcare sector by successfully performing the country's first robotic cardiac surgery, highlighting its growing expertise in advanced surgical technology.
